Czech V4 Presidency

V4 Presidents Summit | 2 – 3 October 2019 | Lány Chateau

The Czech Republic presides over the Visegrad Group (V4) between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020.

The Czech Republic is taking over the V4 Presidency in a period full of challenges both at national and European level. It is a period after the European Parliament elections (May 2019) when a new EU institutional cycle is beginning and when new priorities are being outlined. At the same time, the Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU for the years 2021 – 2027 will be finalised during this period. Besides long-term challenges such as the security, asylum and migration policy, the EU will need to address tasks related to the scheduled Brexit.

During its Visegrad Presidency, the Czech Republic wants to follow up on the agenda of the Slovak Presidency and promote a rational, pragmatic and constructive approach to current challenges and problems faced by our countries and Europe at large. The Czech Republic shall support efforts aimed at further stabilisation of the European continent, including the process of expanding and promoting the neighbourhood policy.

Objectives of the Czech Presidency

Czech V4 Presidency | 1/7/2019 – 30/6/2020

The main objective of the Czech Presidency is to strengthen the position of the V4 countries in the EU and in the NATO whilst strengthening the unity and cohesion of these two organisations. The Visegrad countries should thus contribute to building a strong, operational, competitive and secure Europe based on the values of democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights and freedoms as well as on the principles of subsidiarity, proportionality and sustainability.

The Czech Republic sees the Visegrad Group as a traditional platform for dialogue and practical cooperation in the Central European region, valuable in particular thanks to the high level of mutual trust, respect and ability to reach compromise. Visegrad cooperation should continue to be efficient, informal, flexible and inclusive and focus on specific and positive projects that have real added value for the Czech Republic, the V4 countries and the EU at large. Visegrad cooperation in its formats and projects should aim at openness to other European partners, first and foremost to neighbours and should hence strengthen its coalition potential within the EU.
